About Amarkantak

Amarkantak is a town and Nagar Panchayat in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. Also a pilgrim town, Amarkantak is the meeting point of the Vindhya and the Satpura Ranges and so enjoys abundance of natural beauty. Narmada River, Son and Johila River emerges from Amarkantak.

Profile of Amarkantak

It is believed that the renowned Indian poet and sage Kabir meditated on a “Chabutra” in Amarkantak which is now famous as the Kabir Chabutra or Kabir’s Platform. According to the census of 2011, the population of the town was 8416. The literacy rate of the town us 80.20 percent. Hindi is the official as well as local language of Amarkantak.

Geography of Amarkantak

The town is positioned at 22.822°North and 81.7532°East. The avg. elevation of the town is 3438 feet or 1048 meter. Amarkantak is bounded by an affluent variety of flora which has therapeutic properties. The town is surrounded by a rich variety of flora with medicinal properties.The Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Amarkantak. Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve acts as green lung for the city.  The forests of Amarkantak are also linked with Kanha National Park which is famous for Bengal tigers. Pinus caribaea, known as tropical pine is found in abundance in the region. It fulfills the high demand for quality pulp wood.

History of Amarkantak

Amarkantak is an amalgamation of 2 Sanskrit words- “Amara” + “Kantaka”. Amara means immortal whereas Kantaka means obstruction.  Kalidas mentioned the town as “Amrakuta” in his creations which became “Amarkantak” after sometime. The ancient temples of Kalachuri period built by Maharaja Karnadeva (1041–1073 AD) highlights the historical importance of the region.

Achanakmar wildlife sanctuary and Kanha National Park are oacted near Amarkantak. Visit Kanha National Park for the sightseeing and explore the wilderness of the forest.
